Alexandrite is a relatively new gemstone that was only discovered some 150 years ago.Although relatively young compared to other gemstones, alexandrite is not at a loss for history, myth and symbolism with which to surround itself. Such a rare and valuable gem with a mysterious origin was unlikely to be ignored when the connection of gemstones with different months or astrological signs had already been accepted for more than 2000 years. Alexandrite is the stone of duality. Green or red, good luck or misfortune, the significance is interpretive and related to the social and historical context of the time and the culture.
Alexandrite is the extremely rare variety of the mineral chrysoberyl that actually changes color from green, in daylight, to red, in incandescent light. It was believed by the russians that the stone was associated with good omen. Alexandrite is said to provide a strong connection between natural and supernatural world. Like other crystals alexandrite is said to connect two romantically associated hearts. This gemstone is also used in curing certain physical ailments and bring inner piece to the wearer. It was discovered in 1830 in Czarist Russia. Since the old Russian imperial colors are red and green it was named after Czar Alexander II on the occasion of his birthday. It is traditionally accepted that alexandrite represents the rational world and the quality of mental clarity. However, the duality of its color just as traditionally represents the duality of characteristics associated with this special gem. Green is the color of revival, hope, prosperity, rest, peace, calm, and fertility. The red of alexandrite connotes energy, activity, self-expression, power, aggression and passion. It would seem that the combination that exists in alexandrite reflects the duality of human nature as exemplified by love and jealousy existing side-by-side or even in the very same place. The daytime color of alexandrite equates to luck and good fortune, while its nighttime appearance is more closely associated with love. Many think that alexandrite speaks to a person's ability to be aware of the interconnection of all things and the rejuvenation and realization of self. Certainly it is significant that the traits of alexandrite can be modified and interpreted, depending on how they apply to different eras and cultures - as well as individuals. Without a doubt, the eternally changing colors of alexandrite endow it with a universal appeal and attractiveness.
The beauty and rarity of alexandrite will continue to inspire the imagination of future generations. Alexandrite is characterized by its mesmerizing ability to change colour in relation to different light sources. Alexandrite looks bluish-green in daylight and then the colour becomes raspberry to plum if moved to artificial light. The most distinct colour changes are seen in thicker stones. An included form of the jewel is even rarer, and known as Cat’s Eye Alexandrite. Alexandrite is now mainly mined in Sri Lanka and Brazil. The original deposits were discovered in the Ural Mountains in Russia in 1830, but have long since been worked out. The largest cut stone is in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington and weighs an incredible 66 carats. Alexandrite enchants the eye and fuels the imagination. Certain legendary powers have now become associated with Alexandrite, stimulated by its dramatic colour-changing ability.
